Drug abuse is associated with significant health risk. Previous evidence have demonstrated many illicit substance such as opioids, amphetamines, cocaine, and cannabis affect immune system functions, inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress mechanisms, and reactive oxygen species production. Therefore, measures to prevent the manifestation, and treatments to improve the symptoms, of these disorder are in high demand. The relationship between substance abuse disorders and the metabolic syndrome is emerging as a public health question of importance to both primary care practitioners and mental health. Although, many studies have indicated a link between metabolic syndrome (e.g., oxidative stress, glycemic control, inflammation, and lipid profiles) with substance abuse disorders. Another critical aspect that needs much attention and effort is our understanding of the association between metabolic syndrome parameters and opioid use disorder. This review includes relevant articles export between 1980 and 2020. The aim of this review article is to investigate the current knowledge and future perspectives associated with the role of metabolic disorder including oxidative stress, glycemic control, inflammation, and lipid profiles) in patients with substance abuse disorders. So, preventive measures and clinical routine screening should be recommended to prevent metabolic syndrome in patients with substance abuse disorders. © 2020, Advanced Scientific Research.
