Here in, an efficient amino-modified magnetic nano-adsorbent (Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2) was applied for the removal of methylparaben (MeP) from aqueous solutions and the removal process was fully optimized by a response surface methodology (RSM). Amino-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM and VSM analysis. The BoxBehnken design (BBD) was successfully employed to optimize and determine the influential parameters such as pH (311), adsorbent dosage (0.11.1 g L1), reaction time (10120 min) and solution temperature (2545°C). The optimal conditions obtained for the adsorption of methylparaben were as follows: temperature, 35°C; pH 7.0; adsorbent dosage, 1.1 g L1; and reaction time, 120 min. Under the optimized conditions, the adsorption capacity of 98 was achieved for methylparaben. Additionally, the maximum amount of MeP adsorbed on the nano-adsorbent was determined to be about 75 mg/g. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics were well suited to the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. Finally, it was found out that amino-functionalized magnetic nano-adsorbent is of great potential to remove methylparaben from various aqueous media. © 2018 Desalination Publications.
